Back-to-School Skills Beyond the ABCs: What Your Child Really Needs
Jul 19, 2025When we think of “getting ready for school,” most of us picture alphabet flashcards, counting to ten, or recognizing colors and shapes.
And while those are great skills to build, they aren’t the only ones that matter.
In fact, many teachers and early childhood professionals will tell you that the non-academic skills—the social, emotional, and self-help ones—often set the foundation for success in the classroom.
If your child is heading off to preschool or kindergarten soon, here are some of the other skills that deserve just as much attention:
1. Listening & Following Directions
Can your child stop and listen when asked? Can they follow one or two-step instructions like “hang up your backpack and sit on the rug”?
These skills support group learning, safety, and daily routines.
2. Taking Turns & Sharing
Learning to wait, share, and take turns doesn’t come overnight—it’s a skill that grows with practice and modeling. Try board games, cooperative play, or setting timers during playtime at home.
3. Asking for Help
This one is big. Whether they’re unsure how to zip a jacket or need a bathroom break, children who know how to ask for help tend to feel more confident and supported in new environments.
4. Independent Self-Care
Can they use the bathroom independently? Wash hands? Open their own snack or lunch? These little things go a long way in helping your child feel capable at school.
5. Emotional Regulation
Transitions, peer conflicts, or being away from home for the first time can all stir up big feelings. Helping your child name their emotions and practice calming strategies (like breathing or sensory tools) can be a game changer.
6. Problem Solving & Trying Again
It’s normal to feel frustrated when something doesn’t work the first time. But can they try again? Ask for help? Find another solution? Building these habits of perseverance helps children thrive even when things get tricky.
